A Healthy, Intact Retina Is Key to Clear Vision
Your retina is responsible for focusing light through your eye's lens, cornea, and pupil, and sending it to your brain through the optic nerve in the form of neural signals. The brain interprets these signals into the visuals we see.
If your vision has become blurred and you've noticed a curtain-like shadow over your field of vision, it's time to seek medical attention from the eye care expert at Macula & Diabetic Eye Center today. Our doctor has performed many years of medical research.
We provide 24/7 emergency services.
Eye Floaters and Flashes
Attached to the retina is a clear gel called vitreous. It lies in the middle of your eye. If you've ever seen small dots, strings, specks, or clouds moving in your area of vision while looking at a plain background, it is because of the tiny clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous that have cast shadows on the retina. These spots in your vision are called floaters.
When the vitreous shrinks as we grow older, it pulls on the retina, causing you to see lightning streaks or flashing lights. You may feel as if you're seeing stars. These bursts of light are called flashes.
Retinal Tear and Retinal Detachment
Even though the vitreous moves away from the retina without causing much harm most of the time, it sometimes may pull hard on the retina causing it to tear. Retinal detachment happens when fluid passes through the tear, thereby peeling the retina off the back of your eye.
Once the retina is detached and your vision becomes blurry, it could lead to blindness if not treated with detached retina surgery at the earliest.
